Adding Movement, Sound, and Special Effects to Objects and Text in Slides Impress has a wide variety of object and text effects you can apply to individual elements of your presentation. This include standard effects, such as moving each line of text in from the left when the slide is shown, and unusual effects such as moving an object along a specific line. The effects are run starting when the slide is displayed. This procedure covers general use of the Effects window; subsequent procedures cover more specialized uses, and combining the effects with other features. Note You can create impressive effects by combining Draw's 3D graphics and Impress's special effects. See Working With Text on page 769. Note To allow effects to run while you're editing a presentation (not running the presentation), use the Allow Effects icon on the Option bar below the work area. To show the Option bar, choose View > Toolbars > Option Bar. Just Making Bullet Points Appear One by One This is a good approach if you just want bullets to appear one by one when you click, using as little memory as possible. -
Click in the first bullet point. -
Click the Effects icon on the main toolbar, at the left side of the work area. -
In the Effects window, in the Effects dropdown list, scroll to the bottom and select Other. -
In the options that appear, select the Appear effect, as shown in Figure 27-1. Figure 27-1. Selecting the Appear effect -
Click the green check mark to apply the effect. -
To see the effect run, choose Slide Show > Slide Show. Click to make each bullet appear. Press ESC to stop the presentation. Using Any Effects in Slides -
Switch to Drawing view and click the Effects icon on the toolbar. (If you can't find the Effects icon, your window is too small. Lengthen it, or look for the tiny black right-pointing arrow at the bottom of the toolbar and click it; the rest of the toolbar will be displayed.) -
Choose View > Preview; the Preview window demonstrates each effect you'll select. -
In the slide, select the object or text in the slide you want to apply the effects to. (If you don't select an object, some icons won't be enabled.) -
In the Effects window, click the Effects icon (object and text effects) or Text Effects icon. -
Make the appropriate object or text effect selections; see Figure 27-2 on page 712. Figure 27-2. Object and text effects If you select one of the effects in the Favorites category, the Text effects icon will be dimmed and unavailable. To make it available again, just click the No Effect effect in the Favorites category, as shown at right. -
Click the green arrow in the upper right corner to apply the effect; it will be run in the Preview window. Make any necessary changes. Note By default, a sound accompanies each effect. Be sure to have the Preview window showing so you're aware of the sounds. If your computer doesn't have sound, that doesn't mean the computer where you do the presentation won't, so be sure to test before you present. To remove a sound, click the Extras icon at the top of the Effects window, then click the Sound icon to deactivate the displayed sound. -
Click the Extras icon and make the appropriate selections (Figure 27-3 on page 713). These will be applied to the currently selected effect. You must have already applied an effect by clicking the green arrow, for the Extras icon to be active. Figure 27-3. Additional options for a text or object effect -
Click the green arrow in the upper right corner to apply the sound. If the arrow isn't enabled or sound doesn't run, be sure you've got an object selected, that the Sound icon is selected as shown in Figure 27-3, that the Preview window is displayed, and that your computer's sound volume is turned up high enough. -
Click the Order icon (Figure 27-4). All effects are listed in the order in which they'll be run. Drag them to a different spot to change the order. Figure 27-4. Viewing and changing effects order -
Click the Presentation icon, if you want to run the presentation. Click the mouse or press the space bar to move from one slide to another; press Escape to end it. |
