One of the big new features is Asian language support. To enable it and use it, just follow these steps.

Note

You need to enable Asian Language Support to have the three new vertical text tools from Draw, available in Draw, Impress, and Writer.

  1. Choose Tools > Options > Language Settings > Languages. Select the Enabled option at the bottom of the window in Figure 5-10.

  2. To specify default fonts for new documents, choose Tools > Options > OpenOffice.org > Basic Fonts (Asian Language). Select the appropriate options in Figure 5-11.

  3. Choose Tools > Options > Language Settings > Writing Aids. Select the appropriate options in Figure 5-12.

  4. Choose Tools > Options > Language Settings > Searching in Japanese. Select the appropriate options in Figure 5-13.

  5. Choose Tools > Options > Language Settings > Asian Layout. Select the appropriate options in Figure 5-14.

Once you've done the basic setup, go ahead and use the formatting in your documents. The following illustrations show some of the windows where it's available.

  1. To set formatting for Asian languages, choose Format > Character > Asian. Layout. Select the appropriate options in Figure 5-15.

  2. Choose Format > Character > Font; select the appropriate options in Figure 5-16.

  3. Choose Format > Paragraph and select the Asian Typography tab. Select the appropriate options in Figure 5-18.

  4. Choose Format > Ruby to specify Ruby text ( explanations corresponding to Asian characters ). Select the appropriate options in Figure 5-18.

  5. Choose Format > Styles > Catalog > New or Modify; the Asian Layout and Asian Topography tabs let you specify style characteristics (Figure 5-19).

  6. Choose Format > Character/Case to choose how case is evaluated in Asian fonts (Figure 5-20).
