This chapter was intended as a brief review of the following router components :

• Memory It is important to understand each type of memory and the function each provides.

• Interfaces and ports Interfaces route packets or bridge frames between network segments, while ports provide management access to the router. You should understand the difference between interfaces and port and where each is configured within the CLI.

• Command-line interface (CLI) Learning to navigate the CLI is essential to successfully being able to configure, manage, and troubleshoot Cisco devices. Hands-on practice will help you master the CLI.

This base knowledge is essential before moving into the lab scenario. For a more in-depth look at these topics, refer to Chapter 3, "Operating and Configuring a Cisco IOS Device," in the book Interconnecting Cisco Network Devices , by Steve McQuerry (published by Cisco Press). In addition, hands-on experience is the key to feeling comfortable navigating the CLI and understanding the different components of Cisco routers.
