WebSphere is not just an IBM application server; it is actually an IBM brand name. Numerous extension and companion products are coming out using the WebSphere name. The core product is the WebSphere Application Server. Other products discussed in this book include:

• WebSphere Programming Model Extensions This product extends the application programming model. A number of its features were discussed in Chapter 9, Advanced Persistence, etc.

• WebSphere Network Deployment This product enables the configuration and management of multi-server configurations. We'll talk about this subject quite a bit in this chapter. In the next section, we will introduce the elements introduced by this product and describe how they inter-relate.

• WebSphere Edge Server This WebSphere extension product is effective for increasing web serving performance, especially in larger configurations. We will briefly introduce this product to help explain one of our later topographies.
