How NetStumbler and MiniStumbler Work

Both NetStumbler and MiniStumbler are active applications.

About once per second, NetStumbler transmits a Probe Request frame. The program then listens for any responding Probe Response data.
Wireless Ethernet Cards that Work with NetStumbler and MiniStumbler

Wireless cards use the Hermes chipset.

NetStumbler 0.4.0 also has expanded support for cards based on the Atheros, Intersil Prism, Atmel, Centrino, and Broadcom chipsets.
Minimum System Requirements

NetStumbler: Windows 95 or later, that’s capable of supporting a wireless card (Windows XP recommended).

MiniStumbler: Windows Handheld PC 2000, Pocket PC 3.0, or Pocket PC 2002, that’s capable of supporting a wireless card.

Antennae and GPS receivers are optional requirements.
Installation

The installer package can be downloaded from either www.netstumbler.com or www.stumbler.net.

The first step after downloading the package is to run the installer program.

Running NetStumbler

NetStumbler has two panes: right and left.

The left pane contains the Filter tree.

The right pane holds the discovered network information.
-
The secondary right pane contains radio signal/noise graphing.
NetStumbler Menus and Tool Icons

There are two menus unique to NetStumbler to select devices and options.

NetStumbler also has three unique tool buttons to control and configure the application.
Running MiniStumbler
-
The running MiniStumbler has a single pane, containing discovered network information.

There are no filters in the running MiniStumbler.
