Preparing Your System for Installation with an ORiNOCO Gold (Hermes Chipset) Card

• The pcmcia-cs module that Slackware 9.1 installs by default is version 3.2.5. To use a Hermes chipset–based wireless card, you need a patched version of pcmcia-cs. Currently, there is no patch available for pcmcia-cs 3.2.5 so you need to downgrade to pcmcia-cs-3.2.3 so you can patch it.

• The pcmcia-cs modules can be downloaded from: http://prdownloads.sourceforge.net/pcmcia-cs.

• The ORiNOCO and Hermes drivers need to be patched as well to enable monitor mode so that Kismet will work.

• The ORiNOCO patches are available from the Shmoo Web site at http://airsnort.shmoo.com/orinocoinfo.html.

• If everything was patched correctly, the iwpriv <interface> command will display that the monitor option is available.

Preparing Your System for Installation with a Prism 2 Chipset Card

• A pcmcia-cs version later than 3.1.33 is required for a Prism 2 chipset card to work with Kismet. Slackware 9.1 installs version 3.2.5 by default so an upgrade to pcmcia-cs is not necessary.

• The Linux wlan-ng drivers are designed to allow Prism 2–based cards to enter monitor mode. These drivers are available from www.linux-wlan.com/linux-wlan/.

• Once the Linux wlan-ng drivers are installed, your Prism 2–based card will work with Kismet.

Installing Kismet

• The current, stable version of Kismet is 4.0.1.

• Kismet can be downloaded from www.kismetwireless.net/download.shtml.

• Installation of Kismet is a very straightforward process involving only three steps:

  • ./configure

  • make dep

  • make install

• After Kismet is installed, the configuration files must be edited to include your systems configuration information before Kismet can be used.
