Preparing Your System for Installation with an ORiNOCO Gold (Hermes Chipset) Card
-
The PCMCIA services do not need to be upgraded within the Fedora operating system in order to load the new ORiNOCO drivers.
-
The ORiNOCO and Hermes drivers need to be patched to enable monitor mode so that Kismet will work.
-
The ORiNOCO patches are available from the Shmoo Web site at http://airsnort.shmoo.com/orinocoinfo.html.
-
If everything was patched correctly, the iwpriv <interface> command will display that the monitor option is available.
Preparing Your System for Installation with a Prism 2 Chipset Card
-
The Linux wlan-ng drivers are designed to allow Prism 2–based cards to enter monitor mode. These drivers are available from www.linux-wlan.com/linux-wlan/.
-
A flaw in Fedora causes the installation of the wlan-ng drivers to effectively break the PCMCIA service. Therefore, you’ll need to edit the /etc/init.d/pcmcia file.
-
Once the Linux wlan-ng drivers are installed, your Prism 2–based card will work with Kismet.
Installing Kismet
-
The current, stable version of Kismet is 4.0.1.
-
Kismet can be downloaded from www.kismetwireless.net/download.shtml.
-
The installation of Kismet is a very straightforward process involving only three steps:
-
./configure
-
make dep
-
make install
-
After Kismet is installed, the configuration files must be edited to include your system’s configuration information before Kismet can be used.
