In this chapter, we provided a basic introduction to the KDE desktop, the other major Linux GUI. It includes tools with much of the same functionality as you might find in Microsoft Windows ”and more. In fact, you can distribute open applications on four or more different desktops. It s easy to configure the KDE desktop to your needs.
A substantial number of extras are available through KDE. This includes a wide variety of software that could easily cost you hundreds of dollars. KDE features the accessories that you need every day. The Internet applications include browsers, e-mail managers, and chat clients . The sound and video utilities allow you to manage, process, and record multimedia. And KDE includes a number of system tools that can help administrators manage their systems.
In the next chapter , we ll look at some of the more important Linux GUI applications, focused on office suites and graphics utilities.
