PowerShell is built on a lot of important underlying technologies that we'll examine in this chapter. This will be a kind of smorgasbord of information that helps you see the broad capabilities that PowerShell has. Some of these topics will be explored in more detail later, but we wanted you to have a little background on these topics to get you started.

You probably don't feel as if you need to know much about the .NET Framework. Or maybe you're just hoping that's the case. Well, you're almost right. You certainly don't need to know much about the .NET Framework. However, you need to know a little so all of PowerShell's features make sense to you. The good news is that what you need to know about the .NET Framework is summarized in this short chapter. In this chapter we'll also explore some WMI essentials since WMI is at the heart of so many administrative tasks that you'll automate through PowerShell.
