The average work experience in IT is nine years, while non-IT experience averages at five years. Sixty-one percent of the respondents have a formal IT qualification, which can be broken down as follows:

• Commercial course 41 percent

• Technical College 12 percent

• Technikon (Technical University) 18 percent

• University 38 percent

• Postgraduate 24 percent

Of the respondents, 27 percent hold a recognised industry certification (e.g., MCSE). 31 percent also have non-IT qualifications.

The fact that the respondents have a number of years experience in IT and are well qualified, contributes to the validity of the survey results.
