Not only can you burn your finished movie to a DVD, you can also output your project file in four formats. You can even output your movie back to your camcorder or, with the proper mechanical setup, to a VHS tape. All the tasks in this chapter dealing with outputting your video start in the same place: the File, Export submenu on the taskbar at the top of your screen. You can export a clip from the Media panel, a portion of the Timeline, or the entire Timeline. This submenu contains the following output, or export, options:

  • The Movie option creates your movie as a Microsoft DV-AVI file, or as other formats if you use the Advanced features.

  • The Frame option grabs a still from your video. For details on how to capture a still image from your video clip, see 21 Grab a Still from Video.

  • The Audio option exports only the audio from a video clip.

  • The Title option exports a selected title.

  • Selecting the Export to DVD option opens the Burn DVD dialog box.

  • Details about the Export to Tape option are covered in 105 Output to DV Hardware or Export to Tape.

  • The MPEG option outputs your movie as an MPEG file, as explained in 108 Output a MPEG File.

  • The QuickTime option outputs your movie as a QuickTime MOV file, as explained in 109 Output a QuickTime File.

  • The Windows Media option outputs your movie as a Windows Media WMV file, as explained in 107 Output a Windows Media (WMV) File.

These output options are necessary if you would like to put your movie on a CD, send your movie as an email attachment, or upload your movie to be viewed on a website.

The MPEG, Windows Media (MWV), and QuickTime file outputs all have settings you can change. These settings control the viewable size, the choice of codec, various audio properties, and the choice of template suitable for web viewing. The templates are based on the viewer's Internet connection speed. For example, the DSL template creates a larger file and viewable image than the mobile phone template does.

MPEG files play in a variety of media players, WMV files play in Windows Media Player, and QuickTime files play in the QuickTime Player. Many of these files can also be played in RealPlayer. QuickTime Player and RealPlayer are available free at their respective websites.

NOTES

Make sure you have a clip highlighted in the Media panel or on the Timeline before you choose an option from the File, Export submenu. If not, the Export option is not available.

If you do not have your camcorder or DV device connected and online, the Export to Tape option is not available.

When outputting to the various formats in this chapter, we will talk briefly about the advanced settings. Although the advanced settings are illustrated in the tasks, I recommend that you leave them at their defaults.
