A new feature and a powerful gem included with Excel is the Research Library, which is a built-in research tool that allows you to search various information sources. Some of these research sources are built into Office and others are external services and require an Internet connection to use them. The following list describes just a few of the tools the research pane can provide:

• Reference tools and sites such as translation tools and a thesaurus

• Web research sites such as Encarta Encyclopedia, Factiva, and eLibrary

• Business and financial sites such as MSN Money and Gale

NOTE

Factiva provides news content from such sources as Dow Jones, Reuters Newswires, and The Wall Street Journal, and eLibrary is an archive for maps, photos, major newspapers, and magazines. Gale is an information provider used by many libraries, schools , and businesses.

NOTE

Hold down the Alt key and click on text in your worksheet to automatically open the Research pane. Excel will automatically place the text into the Search for text box.

Navigating the Research Pane

The Research task pane offers a Back and Forward button similar to a Web browser for reviewing previous searches. The Research task pane displays the results of the search.
