Installing InDesign CS is surprisingly easy. Before installing or upgrading, make sure your system meets the InDesign CS system requirements. Then use the steps in this appendix to make quick work of the installation process. If you're upgrading from an earlier version, you'll actually perform a new installation. But read the section on upgrading at the end of this appendix for information about making the transition to InDesign CS.

InDesign CS System Requirements

InDesign CS does not require extraordinary resources ‚ if you have a Mac or PC that runs one of the required operating systems, you can run InDesign CS. Just be sure to have enough hard-drive space and memory to be able to work with large images, many fonts, and multiple projects, as well as to have multiple applications like Adobe Photoshop open at the same time.

Here are the official requirements:

• For Macintosh systems, a PowerPC G3 or G4 processor running Mac OS X version 10.2 (Jaguar) or later

• For Windows systems, an Intel Pentium II, III, or 4, or equivalent AMD processor running Windows 2000 Service Pack 2 or later, or running Windows XP or later

• At least 220MB of free hard-disk space on the Mac and 245MB of free hard-disk space in Windows for installation (installation also requires free disk space on the startup drive, even if you install InDesign CS software on a different drive)

• 128MB of RAM

• Eight-bit color depth (256 monitors ) at 1024-by-768 monitor resolution

• For PostScript printing, Adobe PostScript Language Level 2 or Adobe PostScript 3

• For the eBook features, QuickTime 6

  InDesign CS runs only on Mac OS X 10.2 and later (and only in native mode, not in Classic mode), Windows 2000, and Windows XP. You must use InDesign 2 for earlier versions of Mac and Windows.
