Another way to customize your copy of InDesign is to specify which layout tools display by default. The lower two- thirds of the View menu, shown in Figure 3-19, let you do this. If you'd prefer not to view the edges of frames , you can hide them by default. Or if you always want to start with a document-wide grid, you can show it by default. To modify viewing defaults, choose:

• View ‚ Show Text Threads (Option+ z +Y or Ctrl+Alt+Y) to show the links between text frames.

• View ‚ Hide Frame Edges ( z +H or Ctrl+H) to hide the edges of frames.

• View ‚ Hide Rulers ( z +R or Ctrl+R) to hide the horizontal and vertical ruler.

• View ‚ Hide Guides ( z +; [semicolon] or Ctrl+; [semicolon]) to hide margin, column, and layout guides.

• View ‚ Show Baseline Grid (Option+ z +' [apostrophe] or Ctrl+Alt+' [apostrophe]) to show the baseline grid established in the Grids pane of the Preferences dialog box (InDesign ‚ Preferences ‚ Grids on the Mac and Edit ‚ Preferences ‚ Grids in Windows).

• View ‚ Show Document Grid ( z +' [apostrophe] or Ctrl+' [apostrophe]) to show the document-wide grid established in the Grids pane of the Preferences dialog box.

In addition to changing which layout tools display by default, you can control some of their default behavior. Check or uncheck the following:

• View ‚ Lock Guides (Option+ z +; [semicolon] or Ctrl+Alt+; [semicolon]). Unchecked by default, when you check this, all new guides are locked in place.

• View ‚ Snap to Guides (Shift+ z +; [semicolon] or Ctrl+Shift+; [semicolon]). Checked by default, when you uncheck this, aligning objects with guides is more difficult, but positioning objects near guides is easier.

• View ‚ Snap to Document Grid(no shortcut). Unchecked by default, when you check this, objects are easy to align with document grid lines whether or not they're showing.

Although not specifically for viewing, you can also customize the way color management works. The Edit ‚ Color Settings options let you customize the default color transformations used for viewing and outputting colors (see Chapter 29).
