You can also create multilevel lists by using the numbering and bullet feature. Multilevel lists contain two or more levels within a particular list. For example, a multilevel list might number primary items in the list, but secondary items (which fall under a particular primary item) in the list are denoted by sequential letters of the alphabet. Figure 15.6 shows a numbered, multilevel list. Figure 15.6. A multilevel numbered list uses several levels of numbering, as an outline does. To create a multilevel list, follow these steps: -
Place the insertion point where you want to begin the list, or select text in an already existing list. -
Select Format, Bullets and Numbering . The Bullets and Numbering dialog box opens. -
Click the Outline Numbered tab to view the multilevel options (see Figure 15.7). Figure 15.7. Use the Outline Numbered tab to select the outline style for your multilevel list. -
Select the style of multilevel list you want to use in your document. -
After customizing the list options in the Customize Outline Numbered list, click OK to return to the Outline Numbered tab. -
Click OK to close the Bullets and Numbering dialog box and return to the document. -
To enter first-level items in the list, type the item (it will be automatically numbered as appropriate). Press Enter to move to the next line. -
To demote the next line to the next sublevel (the next level of numbering), press the Tab key. Then, type your text. Press Enter to move to the next line. -
If you decide to promote a line that you have demoted using the Tab key, make sure the insertion point is on the line, and then press Shift+Tab . When you have finished with the current line, press Enter to continue. | Promote or Demote with the Toolbar You can also promote or demote items using Decrease Indent and Increase Indent on the Formatting toolbar. | When you have completed your list, you can turn off the numbering by clicking the Numbering button on the Formatting toolbar (this deactivates numbering). |
