The Modern RPG IV Language

OVERVIEW

The RPG language contains a rich set of command functions. These functions are commonly referred to as operation codes, the abbreviated form op codes, or the simpler term operations. These operations provide a wide variety of processes within an application program. The programmer specifies these operations, left justified, in positions 26 to 35 of calculation specifications. The following list of terms is used when referring to the areas of the RPG calculation specification. When referring to columns:

• 7 to 8, the term control-level indicator is used.

• 9 to 11, the term conditioning indicator is used.

• 12 to 25, the term factor 1 is used.

• 26 to 35, the term operation or op code is used.

• 36 to 49, the term factor 2 is used.

• 36 to 80, the term extended factor 2 is used.

• 50 to 63, the term result field is used.

• 64 to 68, the term field length is used.

• 69 to 70, the term decimal positions is used.

• 71 to 72, the term resulting indicator 1 is used.

• 73 to 74, the term resulting indicator 2 is used.

• 75 to 76, the term resulting indicator 3 is used.

The preceding terms are used in place of column numbers to easily identify the areas of a calculation program statement.
