Lesson 3.3. Entering Material Resources Figure 3-3. Entering a material resource in the project. Material resources are the goods needed by work resources to complete tasks. Tracking the use of material resources helps track the rate at which the resources are used, as well as their costs. This is especially applicable in building and construction projects that use a lot of materials, such as lumber, steel, or glass. This project will use a lot of CDs as inserts in the books. Let's enter them as a material resource. Click the empty cell below the Recording studio resource in the Resource Name field. Type Blank CDs and press Tab. Now define this as a material type of resource. Click the Type field list arrow and select Material from the list. Press Tab. One field that is important for material resources is the Material Label field. The material label is the unit you use to measure the material resource. Type 100-CD spindles and press Tab. Project will track the rate and cost of the consumption of 100 CDs at a time. Next, enter the cost of each spindle of CDs. Click in the Std. Rate field of the Blank CDs resource. Type 20 and press Enter. Notice that the material's standard rate depends on its consumption; it does not depend on hourly, daily, or weekly rates. In this case, one spindle of 100 CDs will cost $20 in the project. Compare your project to Figure 3-3.
