Lesson 3.9. Assigning Material Resources to Tasks

Figure 3-12. The Assign Resources dialog box with material resource assignments.

Figure 3-13. Resources that are assigned to a task appear at the end of the task's bar.

It's good to assign material resources to tasks so you can see how much material you are using and at what cost. Assigning a material resource to a task isn't very different from assigning a work resource. The main difference is that you have to enter the amount of the resource that will be used, rather than the resource availability.

  1. Select the Duplicate and kit CDs task and click the Assign Resources button.

The Assign Resources dialog box appears.

  2. Select the Blank CDs resource from the Resource List in the dialog box, as shown in Figure 3-12.

Notice that the material label you entered when you created the resource (100-CD spindles) is used to indicate the number of units scheduled to be consumed.

  3. Click the Assign button.

You have assigned the "Blank CDs" resource to the task, but you must also enter the number of resource units needed. Enter that number in the Units field.

  4. Click the Units field, type 50 and press Enter.

Right now, you are planning on duplicating 5,000 CDs when working on the "Duplicate and kit CDs" task.

  5. Click the Close button.

The material resource is assigned to the task, as shown in Figure 3-13.
