Requesting XHTML Documents

This section shows how to request an XHTML document from the Apache HTTP server. In the Apache HTTP server directory structure, XHTML documents must be saved in the htdocs directory. On Windows platforms, the htdocs directory resides in C:Program FilesApache GroupApache2. On Linux platforms, the htdocs directory resides in the /usr/local/httpd directory.[3] Copy the test.html document from the Chapter 19 examples directory on the book's CD-ROM into the htdocs directory. To request the document, launch a Web browser, such as Internet Explorer or Netscape, and enter the URL in the Address field (i.e., http://localhost/test.html). Figure 19.3 shows the result of requesting test.html. [Note: In Apache, the root directory of the Web server refers to the default directory, htdocs, so we do not enter the directory name before the file name (i.e., test.html) in the Address field.]

[3] Linux users may already have Apache installed by default. The htdocs directory may be found in a number of places, depending on the Linux distribution.
