PANIC! UNIX System Crash Dump Analysis Handbook (Bk/CD-ROM)

As we examined the other crashes the customer sent in, we saw a definite pattern emerge. Each crash dump showed the following characteristics:

  • The PC according to trap() was always off by at least one instruction.

  • The failing instruction always involved an "incomplete" memory address.

  • The failing instruction was using %g1 .

  • The failures were not limited to the idle() routine.

Also, the frequency of the problems was increasing. The customer's system was in trouble!
