Getting Started with OpenVMS: A Guide for New Users (HP Technologies)

This section describes the login screen Options menu. Most users rarely have a need to change any of these settings.

Options: Language

Allows you to choose the session language.

Options: Session

• New Desktop This is the default desktop for OpenVMS, based on the Common Desktop Environment (CDE). It is one of two desktops supported by OpenVMS, the other being DECwindows.

• Failsafe Session This starts a basic session with a single DECterm terminal window. This is mostly used for correcting problems that otherwise prevent your selected desktop from running. Use this option only when needed to correct a problem.

• DECwindows Session This causes the older DECwindows GUI to run instead of the New Desktop. The DECwindows interface is discussed later as a separate topic.

Options: Reset Login Screen

Resets the X Server, the software that coordinates and oversees the general operation of the GUI.
