Chapter 9. It's Not Sanskrit: Tips for ActionScript Wanna hear a funny story? Me neither, so I'll tell this one instead. When I first encountered ActionScript, I thought the guy said "Sanskrit." Being the dedicated professional I am (that was funny), I signed up for a two-year intensive course in Egypt to learn the ancient written language of pictures. I returned from my long journey with the ability to decipher third-dynasty Egyptian hieroglyphics. I felt prepared to take on the entire Flash world. Of course, then I found out that the guy said "ActionScript" and discovered that I was right back where I started. Now some people say that I'm an idiot for my mistake, but I like to think of it as a creative misinterpretation of the English language. Besides, I can now read/write in a three-thousand year-old language, which is a great conversation piece in groups. From the little I actually do know about ActionScript, I'll say that this chapter covers a lot of the popular tasks one might use it for. If you're like me and you don't know much about this crazy language, then I think you'll like this chapter and what it can do to fill out your toolset. Just remember...it's not Sanskrit. It'll save you a couple years. |
