Do Subreports need to be based on the same data source as their associated main report?

No Subreports can be based on completely independent data sources than those of their associated main report.

Can I save embedded Subreports as standalone Crystal Reports if I have created them within a main report.

Yes by opening the Subreport in its own design window, the Save Subreport As option can be accessed from the main File menu.
