A sound plays until the frames run out or until the looping option you set runs out. But you can program a sound to stop at other times by following these steps:

Select the frame in the Sound layer where you want to stop the sound.

Add a Keyframe (F6).

Select the sound filename from the Sound field drop-down list in the Property inspector.

From the Sync menu click on the Stop option. Now when the new Keyframe is reached the sound will stop.
