I first introduced the notion of bug patterns in Diagnosing Java, my column for the IBM developerWorks Java Zone. The articles in that column, as well as many other useful resources are available online at the Java Zone Web site:

Many of the examples in this book are taken from, or inspired by, experiences with DrJava, an open-source development environment for Java copy righted under the GNU General Public License. DrJava is an extreme programming project at Rice University, conducted under the supervision of my PhD advisor, Robert Cartwright.
