The mix
I kept things simple on all of them and a summary is all that is necessary.
-
Bass and drums are in the center.
-
Brass 1 is in the center because it carries the tune.
-
Brass 2 and 3 are supporting parts and are set at lower levels than brass 1. However they are panned left and right and provide the main stereo spread.
-
Solo trumpet is in the center but not too loud (muted if the sax is used).
-
Guitar is placed left and kept low in the mix.
NOTE
There are three mixes on the CD, Platinum ( Figure P6.44 ), Gold and Silver, each using slightly different plug-ins. However, should a plug-in not be found, just replace it with the equivalent included with your particular version.

Modest amounts of reverb are applied to the MIDI tracks.
6silvmix
On 6silvmix, Siver Compressor (Figure P6.45) has been inserted on the sax track and a vocal pre-set has been applied. The sax is then sent to SilverVerb (Figure P6.46) via Bus 1 and treated with the Hall pre-set as a starting point.

6goldmix
On 6goldmix, Compressor (Figure P6.47) has been inserted on the sax track and a vocal pre-set has been applied. The sax is then sent to GoldVerb (Figure P6.48) and treated with the Long Reverb pre-set as a starting point.

6platmix
On 6platmix, Compressor (Figure P6.47) has been inserted on the sax track and a vocal pre-set applied. The sax is then sent to PlatinumVerb (Figure P6.49) where a Bright Long Reverb pre-set is applied as a starting point. The overall effect is similar to many up-front pop vocal treatments .

View and listen to the results in project6/6silvmix, project6/6goldmix and project6/6platmix alternately muting Track 4 (MIDI solo trumpet) and Track 10 (Audio tenor sax) to compare versions. Now experiment with the compressors and send effects. That's how you learn. Happy twiddling!
