Overview

Binary executable modules are deployed to a Geronimo server through the help of deployment descriptors and deployment plans. Deployment descriptors are mandatory elements of standard J2EE deployable archives, and are J2EE container neutral. Often, standard J2EE deployment descriptors are insufficient to specify everything needed for successful deployment. In these cases, you must create Geronimo-specific deployment plans. All deployment descriptors and plans are XML documents. Depending on the type of binary module being deployed, there are different deployment plans.

This chapter enumerates and explains the different Geronimo deployment descriptors and deployment plans. The coverage includes:

• The type of modules that each deployment descriptor or deployment plan can be used for

• The placement of the deployment descriptors and deployment plans

• The naming of the deployment plan, when deployed external to a module

• The XML schemas that precisely specify the format of each deployment plan and where you can find them

• How Geronimo configuration and deployment plans are related

Subsequent chapters describe the deployment of different application modules. Instead of providing details of each deployment plan used in this chapter, references are provided for later chapters where each of the plans is covered in detail.
