Active Directory A centralized database that contains information about a network’s users, workstations, servers, printers, and other resources. Active Directory (found on a domain controller) determines who can access what and to what degree. Active Directory is essential to maintaining, organizing, and securing the resources on a larger network; it allows network administrators to centrally manage resources; and it is extensible, meaning that it can be configured to grow and to be personalized for any company.

FAT See file allocation table.

file allocation table (FAT) A type of file system used by older computers to organize the files and folders on the computer. FAT organizes the files on the computer so that they can be accessed when they are needed.

NTFS A type of file system used by newer computers that is much more advanced than the FAT file system. NTFS provides advanced file and folder permissions, encryption, disk quotas, and compression. NTFS is supported by Windows NT, Windows 2000, and Windows XP.

Windows Installer A core component of IntelliMirror, which is used to deploy applications across a domain. Windows Installer is used to install applications and to manage user installation options.
