The purpose of this chapter is to teach you to support end users who run Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional, Windows XP Home Edition, or Windows XP Professional and who use Microsoft Outlook or Outlook Express as their e-mail client. In this chapter, you will learn to create, configure, and troubleshoot e-mail accounts and newsgroups, keep Outlook and Outlook Express running smoothly by maintaining the stored data, and resolve common end-user requests, such as:

• Importing address books and messages from other computers or exporting address books and messages to laptops and other portable devices.

• Setting up a newsgroup.

• Configuring a home account so that e-mail can be retrieved from the network server.

• Leaving a copy of e-mails on the network server.

• Resolving problems related to user name, display name, or e-mail account settings.

  Note

  MSCDT Exam 071-272 covers both Outlook and Outlook Express, but most of the focus in this chapter is on Outlook. Because Outlook Express is a limited version of Outlook, the procedures involved in using it are similar to the procedures for using Outlook, with only minor changes. Of course, the full version of Outlook is much more comprehensive and offers many more features. Be sure you are familiar with both versions and that you can perform the tasks outlined in this chapter in either application.

Before You Begin

Before you begin this chapter, you should have basic familiarity with the Windows XP interface. You should also have a working knowledge of e-mail software. Finally, you should have access to a computer running Windows XP and Microsoft Outlook on which you can experiment with changing various settings.
