Frame Relay performs error detection (and therefore handling) by using the Cyclic Redundancy Check (CRC) method, which determines whether the receiving device (router/FRAD) received the frame error-free. There is an important distinction in that Frame Relay services perform error detection rather than error checking; error detection is based on the premise that the network media carrying the traffic is reliable. Error correction is left to the upper-layer protocols, such as the Transmission Control Protocol (TCP) of the TCP/IP protocol suite.
