• The settings in System Preferences application affect all Mac OS X applications.

• The CDs & DVDs pane determines behavior of Mac OS X upon optical media insertion.

• In the Date & Time preferences pane, you can adjust the majority of your computer’s clock and calendar settings.

• In the Displays preferences pane, you set screen resolution, number of colors, refresh rate, contrast, and brightness. You also select a color profile and calibrate your display. If you have multiple displays, you may be able to adjust how they work together. With some displays, you can adjust the shape and position of the screen image.

• The Energy Saver preferences pane sets timings for sleep mode and options for starting, sleeping, and turning off the computer automatically.

• The Ink preferences pane contains the settings to configure Mac OS X’s handwriting input/recognition capabilities.

• The International preferences pane contains settings for language preference, text behavior, date and time formats, number formats, and keyboard layout in Mac OS X applications.

• The Keyboard & Mouse preferences pane contains settings to configure the sensitivity of the keyboard and the mouse or trackpad. You can also set up full keyboard access to use the keyboard to control the mouse and type combination keystrokes one key at a time by setting up Mouse Keys and Sticky Keys in the Universal Access preferences pane.

• The Sound preferences pane contains settings to adjust the overall sound volume, the alert sound, and its volume for Mac OS X applications.

• The Speech preferences pane allows for configuration of plain verbal communication between humans and Macintosh computers.

• The Startup Disk preferences pane contains settings to specify which Mac OS System Folder is used the next time your computer starts up.

• Universal Access provides a set of adjustments for the visibility and hearing of the display and audio of OS X.
