Microsoft Windows Sharepoint Services Version 3. 0 Step by Step

Although you can create a site on Windows SharePoint Services based on the wiki Web site template, the use of wikis is not limited to those sites. Wikis can be used within any team site by making use of the wiki page library. A wiki page library allows you to create an interconnected collection of Wiki pages.

In the following exercise, you will create a wiki page library and edit the home page.

OPEN the SharePoint site in which you would like to create a wiki page library. The exercise will use the http://wideworldimporters site, but you can use whatever site you want. If prompted, type your user name and password, and then click OK.

BE SURE TO verify that you have sufficient rights to create a wiki page library. If in doubt, see the Appendix on page 435.

1. Click Site Actions. From the drop-down list, click Create. The Create page appears.

2. Under Libraries, click Wiki Page Library. The New page appears.

3. In the Name text box, type CompanyHistory.

Important

The Name field is used for both the title and Web address of the wiki page library. Any Web address (URL) in SharePoint is limited to 260 characters and must not contain the characters /\ : * ? “ < > |# { } % & or ~. Tab characters and multiple periods should also not be used. Spaces in URLs should be avoided because they are replaced by the characters %20 and therefore take up three characters. A Wiki page name should not exceed 128 characters, so you should therefore choose a terse but meaningful name.

4. In the Description text box, type This wiki page library contains a set of Wiki pages that describe the history of our company.

5. Leave the default setting set at Display this document library on the Quick Launch.

6. Click the Create button. The home page appears with the title Welcome to your wiki library.

The CompanyHistory wiki page library is listed on the Quick Launch under Documents.

7. In the breadcrumb, click CompanyHistory. The AllPages view of the CompanyHistory library is displayed.

8. Click Settings, and then click Document Library Settings. The Customize CompanyHistory page is displayed.

9. Under General Settings, click Title, description and navigation. The Document Library General Settings: Company History page is displayed.

10. In the Name textbox, type WideWorldImporters History and then click Save. The Customize WideWorldImporters History page is displayed.

The title of the wiki page library is now WideWorldImporters History; however, the Web address is unchanged and remains as http://wideworldimporters/companyhistory.

11. In the breadcrumb, click WideWorldImporters History and then click Home. The home page appears with the title Welcome to your wiki library.

The WideWorldImporters History wiki page library is listed on the Quick Launch under Documents.

12. Under Recent Changes, click How To Use This Wiki Library. The How To Use This Wiki Library page is displayed.

13. Under Recent Changes, click Home. The home page appears.

14. At the top of the page, click the Edit button.

The edit form for the WideWorldImporters History: Home page is displayed with a formatting toolbar placed above the Wiki Content area.

15. Place the cursor in the Wiki Content area to the left of the Welcome title. Press to select all of the content, and then press .

The contents of the Wiki page are deleted.

Tip

Other keyboard shortcuts can be found by hovering the cursor above the buttons on the formatting toolbar.

16. In the Wiki Content area, type The History of WideWorld Importers, and then press to move the cursor to a new line.

17. Select the sentence you just typed, and press .

18. On a new line, type This set of Wiki pages is a compilation and an archival record of the origins of WideWorldImporters.

Tip

Start a Wiki page with an introduction that states its purpose. The first page in the wiki page library is labeled Home and should contain the context or any assumptions that will apply to all Wiki pages stored in that library. If you edit an existing wiki page, you should not place new content before the introduction, nor should the content necessarily be added to the bottom of the page. You should emphasize the flow of ideas, be concise, write factual information, and stay on topic for the page. Check for spelling and grammar errors that can detract from the wiki content. You might consider entering the text in Microsoft Office Word first, check it for spelling and grammar, and then paste it into the Wiki Content area.

19. Click OK. The home page is displayed, together with a last-modified date and time, plus the name of the person who modified it.

Tip

You can add Web Parts to a Wiki page by selecting Edit Page from the Site Actions menu. A Wiki page contains one Web Part Zone, labeled Bottom, where Web Parts can be added. See Chapter 15, “Working with Web Parts,” for more information.

CLOSE the browser.
