Quite often, intruders attack firewalls in order to cause the firewall to fail and penetrate the corporate network. Network-level intrusion detection systems can decrease the risk of such penetration by temporarily backing up firewalls. Systems of this class are capable of filtering network traffic according to various fields of the IP-packet header. This allows the administrator to organize a rather powerful packet filter with functionality comparable to one provided by advanced firewalls.
