Enterprise Service Bus: Theory in Practice

In this chapter we explored the following:

  • We discussed the concept of itinerary-based routing, and the role it plays in enabling a highly distributed SOA across independently deployed services.

  • We discussed some core ESB services, such as content-based routing and XSLT transformation. Service reusability was also examined.

  • We examined two integration patterns that combine itineraries with special services.

  • We learned about some advanced ESB capabilities such as an XML persistence service and an orchestration service.

  • We discussed the idea of a unified view of a process model, which makes optimal choices between the underlying process model options.

In the next chapter we will explore protocols, messaging, and custom ESB services using a case study from a live ESB deployment in a manufacturing supply chain.
