Photoshop CS For Dummies
So which tool do you use when? If you want to create editable text, use the Horizontal Type tool or Vertical Type tool. Otherwise, it depends on what sort of effect you’re trying to create. Here’s the lowdown:
-
To create opaque type: Use the Horizontal Type tool or Vertical Type tool.
-
To create filled letters: Use the Horizontal Type Mask or Vertical Type Mask tool to create a type-shaped selection. Then convert the selection into a layer mask and apply any effect you would like. To see this technique in action, check out Color Plate 17-1.
-
To soften the edges of your letters: Use the Horizontal Type tool or Vertical Type tool to create the type, and then add cool effects using layer styles. For example, you can create a fuzzy shadow behind your letters, add a beveled edge, or fill the text with a pattern or gradient. Check out Color Plate 17-2 to see layer styles in action.
