• The application log in Event Viewer records Exchange Server 2003 events. Tools such as diagnostic logging and the Monitoring And Status utility determine the events and event levels that are recorded in Event Viewer.

• You use Exchange System Manager to configure protocol logging on NNTP and SMTP virtual servers. However, you need to use IIS Manager to configure protocol logging on HTTP virtual servers. Only the W3C Extended Logging format lets you choose what events to track.

• The Performance console contains two snap-ins. The Performance Logs And Alerts tool is used to configure performance logs and set up alert conditions. System Monitor displays counters in real time and is also used to display logs.

• The eseutil utility is used to defragment databases; the isinteg tool checks database integrity and repairs it as necessary. A fragmented database is larger and slower than it should be; a database that has lost its integrity may not be able to be moved and displays incorrect statistics.
