Key Points

• You need to install and enable ASP.NET when installing Exchange Server 2003 on a Windows Server 2003 member server but not on a Windows 2000 Server member server. A Windows 2000 Server member server needs to have SP3 or later installed.

• You can use the netdiag, ping, tracert, pathping, and telnet utilities to troubleshoot connectivity problems. You can use ipconfig to troubleshoot TCP/IP configuration problems. You can also use ipconfig and nslookup to troubleshoot DNS problems, and dcdiag can troubleshoot Active Directory problems. Nbtstat and netstat return NetBIOS and TCP/IP statistics, respectively. The arp utility displays the ARP cache.

• You can use recovery storage groups to recover mailbox stores and individual mailboxes. The exmerge tool lets you merge data restored to a recovery storage group with the data in an existing mailbox store.

• If you block permission inheritance from a parent object, you can choose to remove all inherited permissions or to copy them.

alert You configure an alert to warn you if the value in a performance counter exceeds or drops below a defined level. An alert writes an event to the application log in Event Viewer, and can also send a message to a specified user, start a performance log, and run an executable file.

recovery storage group You can restore mailbox stores and individual mailboxes to a recovery storage group and then merge them with the contents of the original stores or mailboxes. You cannot restore public folders to a recovery storage group.

netdiag Netdiag is a Windows Server 2003 support tool that performs a series of tests that check services and connectivity within an organization.

dcdiag Dcdiag is a Windows Server 2003 support tool that tests the operation of Active Directory. You can also use it to test DNS operation.
