An Introduction to IMS: Your Complete Guide to IBMs Information Management System

In a broad sense, accessing IMS means telling IMS to perform work for you.

  • You can write application programs that tell IMS what to do.

  • You can use existing application programs that tell IMS what to do.

These application programs can run in many different environments. They tell IMS what to do by calling a number of standard IMS functions through standard APIs: DL/I and JDBC.[1]

[1] The IMS implementation of JDBC supports a selected subset of the full facilities of the JDBC 2.1 API.
