Tool description

The measurement matrix tool provides a powerful progress report in that it calculates and summarizes overall goal achievement performance in an organization. Goals are stated in measurable format and are based on agreed-upon standards. periodic measurement tracks and records performance.

Relative weight is distributed across objectives in accordance with the importance of each objective. The sum of relative weights equals 100.

Use benchmarks or an industry standard for establishing goals.

To measure progress, multiply improvement rating times relative weight for each circled performance indicator value. The sum of all calculations for all circled values gives the current total.

Step-by-step procedure

STEP 1 A team identifies requirements and objectives. Performance benchmark data or industry standards are used to determine measurable goals.

STEP 2 A measurement matrix template is used to record objectives, performance metrics, and goals. In addition, the team reaches consensus on the relative weight distribution across all stated objectives. See example Performance Measurement Matrix.

STEP 3 All intermediate levels of performance between 0 and 10 in the improvement ratings are filled in as shown in the example.

STEP 4 Later, to track performance, periodically measure progress and circle level of goal achievement. Multiply the improvement rating times the relative weight assigned for each goal and sum the total to obtain overall current performance.
