Microsoft Office Word 2003 provides tools to help you create and manage long or complex documents and to help your readers find the information they are looking for.
One way of handling long documents is to break them into a set of subdocuments with a master document. The master document contains hyperlinks to all the subdocuments, allowing navigation to different parts of the document with the click of a button. However, each subdocument can be worked on independently.
If you are reading a long document and come across an item you think you will want to refer to later, you can flag the item with a bookmark. When you can predict that readers will want to jump to a specific location in a document, you can insert a cross-reference. Both techniques enable readers to jump quickly to another place in a document.
To make information easy to find, you can include tables of contents and indexes in long documents. You can also use Word’s AutoSummarize feature to highlight the key points in a document for quick reference.
In this chapter, you’ll work with master documents and subdocuments, insert bookmarks and cross-references, create and modify a table of contents and an index, and summarize a document.
