2.2 Porting preparation overview

This section briefly discusses the different steps needed to prepare the environment to receive the data. These steps include installation of DB2 UDB, instance and database creation, and table space planning. We also include special consideration for the partitioning environment. Chapter 4., "Porting with MTK" on page 63 discusses these steps in more detail as we prepare the migration environment. Before attempting DB2 UDB installation, we strongly recommend you to read the installation instructions provided in the Quick Beginnings for DB2 Servers, GC09-4836. The tasks needed in preparing the DB2 UDB environment are:

• DB2 UDB V8 ESE installation

  First task is to decide which Edition of DB2 UDB fits your business requirement. The application assessment step provides you the base criteria to select the DB2 UDB Edition. Regardless of the platform, you need to verify whether or not the system satisfies hardware and software requirements. For the DB2 UDB installation process, we use both AIX and Windows as the main platforms for installation in this redbook. Installing DB2 UDB ESE on a platform such as SUN Solaris and HPUX requires modifying the operating system kernel parameters. System reboot is required afterwards.

• Additional software requirements

  There are software considerations to take into account when running a database environment. These considerations will revolve around the type of applications accessing the database. If database development is desired, then the proper versions of the different software components must also be installed on the server, such as C or Java compilers.

• Instance and database creation

  The next task to perform is to proceed with creating a DB2 instance and database. You need to consider details such as Instance and database location, user IDs required, permission requirements, etc. Chapter 4., "Porting with MTK" on page 63 discusses the ways to create DB2 instances and databases.

• Table space planning

  Once the database has been created, it becomes ready for object creation. This is the space planning for data. DB2 UDB allows for two types of table spaces, System Managed Space (SMS), which is maintained by the system, and Data Managed Space (DMS), which is maintained by the DB2 administrator. If you are satisfied with the way the data is organized in the source database, you can look for the compatible way to organization the data in the DB2 UDB database. This is also the chance for you to change the way the data is placed so the maintenance is easier and the performance is better.
