AUTOGEN is run automatically when OpenVMS is installed or upgraded to adjust system parameters to the hardware configuration.

AUTOGEN should be run periodically to capture data that OpenVMS collects. Thius data reflects actual loading.

Certain system parameters are not touched by AUTOGEN and must be manually adjusted to reflect site policy and usage.

MONITOR is used to examine performance in real time and in background.

Several other performance programs are provided by Compaq/HP for tuning and planning purposes.
