If a spreadsheet is a giant list, a database is a giant file cabinet. Each "file cabinet" is actually a separate database file, and contains individual index cards (called records) filled with specific information (arranged in fields).

If you want to create a huge industrial-strength database, you'll need to invest in a professional-level database program, such as Microsoft Access or Corel's Paradox. For more casual use, there's always Works Database, included with Microsoft Works and Works Suite. Works Database is the right program to use if you want to create a database that contains all your favorite recipes or the contents of your CD or DVD collection.
