Windows XP for Home Users, Service Pack 2 Edition

It doesn't happen often, but once in a while a problem comes up that is so severe it requires you to uninstall Windows XP. This is actually a fairly easy process in Windows XP, as a copy of your previous operating system is kept on your hard disk, just for this purpose.

CAUTION

Any software applications that you added or modified since the Windows XP installation may not work properly when you revert to the previous operating system. Windows XP will warn you of most potential issues before the uninstallation process begins.

To uninstall Windows XP, follow these steps:

1.

From the Control Panel, click the Add or Remove Programs icon.

2.

When the Add or Remove Programs utility opens, press the Change or Remove Programs button.

3.

Scroll down the list of programs, select Windows XP, and click the Change/ Remove button.

4.

When prompted, select Uninstall Windows XP, then follow the onscreen instructions to remove the operating system.

This process removes Windows XP and reverts to your previous version of Windows. It should work fine, except in the following conditions:

  • You changed hard disk configuration from what it was at the time of installation. (For example, if you switched from FAT32 to NTFS.)

  • If you upgraded from Windows NT 4.0 or Windows 2000 Professional.
