The multilanguage support inWord comes to you courtesy of the Microsoft Office XP Multilingual User Interface Pack (MUI), which is available for Windows 98, NT 4.0, or Windows 2000. You'll find the Multilingual User Interface Pack on its own CD in your Microsoft Office package; the Pack has its own installation utility that you can use to setup the languages for use with Word. After you install the MUI Pack, you'll be able to use the following features:

• Automatic language detection. Word automatically detects up to 80 different languages and uses the correct dictionaries, punctuation rules, and sorting conventions for the language.
• Font support. All Office programs link to a second font for characters if the primary font is missing language-specific characters you need.

Multilanguage Enhancements in Word 2002

Working with multiple languages is easier than ever in Word 2002. The multilanguage support in Office XP has been streamlined and included in a way that makes installing and working with multiple languages a nearly seamless experience for the end user. Here are the major multilanguage changes in Word 2002:

• Independent Setup for Languages. You can set up each language independently by using the Office XP Multilingual User Interface Pack Setup. When you add a language by running setup and using the Windows Add/Remove Programs dialog box, you'll be able to see and load each language as a separate item.
• Automated Installation. The setup wizard walks you through the process of installing multilanguage support. If you're installing support on a network, you should contact your network administrator before proceeding, however.
• Easy Office Integration. Office XP automatically sets up the user interface, Help systems, and default language based on the selections you make during installation. Editing languages are enabled on each startup based on operating system support and keyboard/Input Method Editor (IME) support.
• Changeable Language Options. End users can now change application settings and the default language behavior of Office applications (such as default paper size, default labels, and default spellers).

In past versions of Word, you had to rely on Windows installation to provide multilanguage features. Now Office XP not only includes the Multilingual User Interface, but it employs a setup wizard to help you install the languages you want to use.

• Date, time, and number formats. Word formats the date, time, and number formats in the manner applicable to the language selected.
• Right-to-left editing. If you're working in a language that requires right-to-left work, you can edit Word documents in that way.
