A+ Technician's on the Job Guide to Windows XP

Broadband connections are typically “always on, always connected.” This means that you do not have to dial a connection or worry about disconnects. You simply launch a browser or your e-mail client to connect. However, if you are using a dial-up connection, you must establish a connection to the ISP each time that you want to connect to the Internet. To launch the connection, you can use the connection icon that appears in the Network Connections folder, now that you have created the connection. Internet connections appear in Network Connections, which is available by clicking Start | Control Panel | Network, and is displayed in the folder as Dial-Up or LAN or High-Speed Internet, as shown in Figure 12-1.

You can easily launch the connection from within Network Connections simply by double-clicking the connection icon, or by right-clicking the connection icon and clicking Connect. The Connect dialog box appears, as shown in Figure 12-2.

Enter your username and password for the ISP. Notice that you can choose to save the username and password so that you do not have to retype it each time you want to connect. You can save the password for Me Only, which will allow the connection to be used only with your user account, or you can choose to allow anyone who uses the computer to use the Internet connection. The phone number you entered appears by default. Simply click Dial to make the connection.

Note

If you use the Me Only option, you are the only user who can launch the connection. However, if you leave the computer unattended, anyone who sits at the computer while you are logged on can launch the connection. If you want to make certain that no one else can ever use the connection, simply leave the Save This User Name and Password for the Following Users check box disabled, which will disable both suboptions. This way, you’ll have to supply the username and password each time you connect.
