Review the scenario and complete the Business Structures Worksheet.
Scenario
You have been selected to be an infrastructure planner on the Active Directory infrastructure design team for Vigor Airlines, a regional airline with five offices located in Montana, Idaho, Nevada, Utah, and Wyoming. You work at the company's headquarters in Butte, Montana. Your first task is to interview some of the staff representatives on the design team to find out Vigor's business structure. Using your Business Structures Worksheet, you interview Greg Chapman, who manages the IT department from his office in Butte, Montana. Greg tells you that there are about 100 employees in the Administration department at headquarters, but only 75 of those are network users. The Administration department serves as the decision-making unit of the organization and carries out administrative functions. The network users in Administration use the network for marketing, accounting, training, and IT functions. Greg explains the basics about the other departments. The Maintenance department is located at the Salt Lake City, Utah, office, which has 50 employees, of which about 40 are network users. The Operations department is located at the Reno, Nevada, office, which has 100 employees, of which all are network users. The Boise, Idaho, and Laramie, Wyoming, offices are small sales offices with a combined total of 50 network users. The Maintenance, Operations, and Sales departments all report to the Administrative department.
You contact members of the design team from the Maintenance, Operations, and Sales departments to confirm the number of users, to find out the purpose of each department, and to find out how the users use the network. The Maintenance department is responsible for maintaining the company's aircraft. The users in this department use the network to document their maintenance activities and to maintain parts inventories. The Operations department is responsible for coordinating the components that keep the aircraft flying, such as scheduling food purveyors, baggage handlers, pilots and flight attendants, and purchasing fuel. They use the network to coordinate all of these activities. The Sales department is responsible for advertising and selling seats on airline flights. The users in this department use the system for ticketing and developing advertisements. You find out from another design team member in the Laramie sales office that they will soon be moving to Colorado Springs.
