- VLAN

Virtual Local Area Network. A logical partition of a Layer 2 network in which the end nodes may be part of the same physical LAN but belong to different VLANs.

The name of a real-time operating system product from Wind River Systems.
- WAN

Wide Area Network. A network which spans a large geographic area. Frame Relay and X.25 are examples of WAN technologies.
- warm standby

A redundancy scheme in which the standby card was initialized but still requires operator intervention and/or last configuration update for the primary before it can take over.
- Web-based management

HTTP-based management in which the user connects with the communications device via a browser and configures/monitors parameters on the device.
- WRED

Weighted Random Early Detection. A variation of RED which uses weighted probabilities for the priorities of packets to select the packets to discard.
- XML

Extensible Markup Language. A “meta language” used to describe other languages, it is used to improve the functionality of the Web as well as provide a uniform language for communicating between applications on different hosts.
