MCSE Core Required Exams in a Nutshell: The required 70: 290, 291, 293 and 294 Exams (In a Nutshell (OReilly))

This chapter provides a study guide for Exam 70-293: Planning and Maintaining a Microsoft Windows Server 2003 Network Infrastructure. Sections within the chapter are organized according to the exam objective they cover. Each section identifies the related exam objective, provides an overview of why the objective is important, and then discusses the key details you should know about the objective to both succeed on the test and master the objective in the real world.

The major topics covered on Exam 70-293 are:

Planning and Implementing Server Roles and Server Security

Designed to test your knowledge of security configuration planning for servers that are assigned specific roles. Objectives cover baseline security as well.

Planning, Implementing, and Maintaining a Network Infrastructure

Designed to test your knowledge of network infrastructure planning for TCP/IP addressing, Internet connectivity, network traffic monitoring, and name resolution. Objectives cover both WINS and DNS naming strategies.

Planning, Implementing, and Maintaining Routing and Remote Access

Designed to test your knowledge of remote access security planning as well as planning for IP routing. Objectives also cover implementing IPSec policy and troubleshooting TCP/IP routing.

Planning, Implementing, and Maintaining Server Availability

Designed to test your knowledge of high-availability planning for clustering services and Network Load Balancing. Objectives also cover identifying system bottlenecks and backup and recovery planning.

Planning and Maintaining Network Security

Designed to test your knowledge of a broad array of network security planning skills that extends to secure remote administration and network protocol security. Objectives also cover security for wireless networking.

Planning, Implementing, and Maintaining Security Infrastructure

Designed to test your knowledge of planning for public key infrastructure (PKI) that uses Certificate Services. Objectives also cover planning security for update infrastructure.

The sections of this chapter are designed to reinforce your knowledge of these topics. Ideally, you will review this chapter as thoroughly as you would your course notes in preparation for a college professor's final exam. That means multiple readings of the chapter, committing to memory key concepts, and performing any necessary outside readings if there are topics with which you have difficulty.

As part of your preparation, I recommend using two test networks or reconfiguring a single test network as necessary to get hands-on practice for the exam. The first network/configuration can be set up as discussed for the previous exam with three machines:

  • A domain controller running Windows Server 2003 configured with DNS, DHCP, and TCP/IP routing.

  • A workstation configured as a domain member, running Windows XP Professional or later to be used as your primary system for management.

  • A workstation configured as a member of a workgroup, running Windows XP Professional or later to be used for remote access testing.

These systems can be virtual machines installed as part of a virtual test environment and should be fresh installs to ensure that you are starting with a new environment. The second network/configuration is for planning and implementing high availability. You'll need two to three servers running Windows Server 2003, configured as part of a domain environment.
