Using Pull-Down Menus

Click the View menu to pull it down.

Look at the Zoom command. It is followed by three dots ( ) to indicate that by selecting it, you will open a dialog box. Click the command.

The Zoom dialog box opens. Click the Cancel button to close it.

INTRODUCTION The menu bar contains nine pull-down menus ”File, Edit, View, and so on ”that contain commands for executing Word tasks . Many of these commands have equivalent buttons on the toolbars , and in most cases, it's more convenient to use the toolbar buttons than the menus. However, if you accidentally hide a toolbar or if you don't like using the mouse, you can always rely on the menus instead. In this task, you take a quick tour of the menus to see how they work.

TIP Using Your Keyboard to Issue Commands If you want to use your keyboard instead of your mouse to issue a menu command, press the Alt key, and then press the letter that's underlined in the menu name .

Click the Insert menu, and then point to Picture . The small triangle to the right of the Picture command indicates that a submenu will appear. Click outside the Insert menu to close it.

Click the Edit menu. The grayed-out commands are not currently available.

Point to the Expand arrow at the bottom of the Edit menu. (Alternatively, you can rest your mouse pointer over the menu name for a few seconds.)

The menu expands to show you all of its commands. Click outside the menu to close it.
